Stencil Girl Hop Featuring Jane LaFazio

So Many Things to be Grateful for.....

My Love for Wool Applique goes back many years.
When I saw the Texas Red Oak Stencil by Jane LaFazio
I knew I could incorporate her Leaf and Acorn shapes
into a gift for my son and his wife.
They moved into a new house this summer
and their kitchen is red and brown.
I think they need a fall table runner, don't you?
This is not as hard as it looks, my friends! Trust me!
Start with Freezer Paper from your local grocery store.
Trace your stencil shapes onto the paper side and cut them out.
Iron the shiny side onto your wool, cut these out
and place on to your background piece.
Peel the paper off..isn't that cool?
I usually baste the shapes down so I can carry it
to where I want to do the handwork.
Wool applique is great
while you are watching football on tv with the hubby!
Or your DVR'd shows so you can FF through the commercials!

Then you just stitch down the edges with wool thread
or cotton floss or pearl cotton.
Wool is very forgiving.
You don't really see the stitches much
if you use a similar colored thread.

After the leaf and acorn shapes were all stitched down
I embroidered the leaf veins and details
with a plain stem stitch in a contrasting thread.
Now to decide on the border.....
Hmmm...red and brown is the obvious choice!

To me, this is the hardest part because I am not a math person.
I eyeballed it to get it centered
and managed to sew the border patchwork
so it fit pretty well! Not bad!

 And then to finish it....
Not everyone has a longarm quilt machine to do the quilting part.
It would look awesome quilted by hand too.
This is just how I do it....
It kind of looks like the wind is blowing them around !
I love how it turned out!

Look at that depth and texture!
Solid yet Puffy!
The wool is so Scrumptious!!!!
Yes!
Lucious and Scrumptious!
I am so Grateful for the Beauty in this world!
