StencilGirl Meets Distress Crayons

Hi Stencil Friends!

It's Day 3 of the StencilGirl and Tim Holtz Hop.

Today we are featuring Distress Crayons.

I used the Distress Crayons, Stencils, Canvas Paper and Moleskine Notebooks.

First I took a large sheet of the canvas paper and started layering 

the Distress Crayons in a few shades of blues.

(Salty Ocean, Tumbled Glass and Chipped Sapphire)

I used my fingers, a dry soft cloth or the Ranger Ink Blending Tool...

Just to experiment with different tools.

I used my Curlicue Stencils... the Curlicue Floral, Curlicue Wide Borders,

and later on in the process I used the Curlicue Daily Border Starters and the Fly 6.

I made a nice soft textural base and did a light coat of gesso over it.

Mostly because I wanted to see what would happen.

Next I used that soft cloth and blended those blue Distress Crayons, 

as well as Cracked Pistachio and Picket Fence.

I loved the ghostly impressions of the Curlicue Stencils underneath.

I thought I'd like to rub some away, so I went a little darker and heavier

with more marks and more blending.

How do you like the canvas texture coming through too?

Yes! I love it!

I held the bird stencil down and with a DRY cloth softly rubbed the crayons away...

but not to the layer of gessoed canvas.

On the border I used a WET baby wipe which

 took more of the crayon away so it was almost to the gesso layer.

Huge Difference!

I played with the piece, subtracting the blues and adding some 

pinks and yellows in...(Worn Lipstick and Fossilized Amber).

Don't you love layers and layers of goodness!

I came to a place where I was happy with the colors and textures of my canvas.

Somewhere in the process of playing with this

 I had decided I was going to cut and glue and make book covers.

I traced the book on the back of the canvas....

Cut....

 And Glued.

Super Duper Simple!

I freehanded words for titles. It would be easy to stamp or stencil them too.

I tried a washi tape spine on one book, but it wasn't really necessary.

I've already given away the small journals.

I always keep one that size in my purse.

They make a perfect little gift for someone special.

Here's my bonus material!

As I was learning about Distress Crayons I watched YouTube Videos

and tried a few techniques in my Daily Journal.

I used Modeling Paste here...

I laid the crayon down heavy over the raised design and wiped it with the wet baby wipe.

I love how the purple crayon (Seedless Preserves) collects around the edges.

Again I used the modeling paste on parts of this green page.

I blended the Crayons (Peeled Paint)

along with green Distress Inks (Mowed Lawn and Shabby Shutters).

Then used the wet baby wipe to take away parts.

Fun.

This last one I used a heavy layer of white Distress Crayon (Picket Fence) 

and let it completely dry.

Since it was such a thick layer that took awhile!

I used this as a resist because I rubbed Distress Inks over it

(Seedless Preserves, Picked Raspberry and Victorian Velvet)

and the inks soaked into the background paper 

differently than the Distress Crayon design element.

I added some collage elements for a fun little page in my Daily.
